Julie Schell Dr. Julie Schell is a postdoctoral fellow in the Mazur Group of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University. She received her Doctorate in Higher Education in May 2009 from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her dissertation, Venturing Toward Better Teaching: S.T.E.M. Professors’ Efforts to Improve Their Introductory Undergraduate Pedagogy at Major Research Universities was selected as the 2009 Dissertation of the Year from the American Educational Research Association, Postsecondary Education Division. She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University. In the Mazur Group, Dr. Schell researches the design, implementation, assessment and dissemination of research-based pedagogies for improving student learning across the disciplines. She has been a key member of educational change initiatives at University of Texas-Austin, University of Pretoria, South Africa and Universidad de Costa Rica. Dr. Schell is an affiliate of the Institute for the Development of Academic Innovation at Harvard, where her work focuses specifically on innovative assessments of student learning. From 2003-2008 Dr. Schell served as a Point Scholar. She co-developed Point’s Mentoring Program, one of her proudest professional accomplishments. A fierce supporter of Point, she has contributed to their mission as a staff member, donor, alumnus, and now a Trustee. She credits Point with providing her the courage, mentoring, and financial resources needed to achieve her academic aspirations and personal integrity as an out scholar. A native of Las Vegas, Dr. Schell now resides in Cambridge, Massachusetts and New York City with her wife, Laura, and their African Basenji. |
