Brandon Perkovich
Harvard College
History and Science
Born in Canton, Ohio and raised in South Florida, Brandon Perkovich was made to cross borders. He came out to his family at 16 after attending a summer session at UCLA where he fell in love with both the study of microbiology and, for the first time, being honest about his sexuality. Struggling to find acceptance among his peers, Brandon committed himself to forming a G.S.A. at his small and conservative private high school. With the unwavering support of his family, Brandon and a handful of close friends eventually succeeded in establishing the G.S.A. after a long and arduous negotiation with school administrators. He was also a founding member of S.M.I.L.E., “Students Making an Impact Lovingly Everyday”, an on-campus organization created to promote a sense of community and to challenge students to, in the words of Gandhi, “be the change [they] wish to see in the world”. He graduated as class president as well as valedictorian with a cumulative GPA of 4.38. Brandon attends Harvard University where he plans on concentrating in microbiology or pre-med, and he hopes to fuse his passions for community service and science into a career in public health.
