Point Honors Benefit - New York 2011

Point Foundation raised over $460,000 at its annual Point Honors New York fundraising gala held at Capitale in New York on April 4, hosted by Kelly Ripa and Sam Champion. An additional $100,000 donation was given to support a Point Named Scholarship.

Iman and Isaac Mizrahi presented the Point Courage Award to Bravo’s Andy Cohen, who thanked his mother for her continued encouragement and support. “So much of who I am is because of her,” he said of his mother, Evelyn, also his date. “This award is for courage, and I look around at all of the Point Scholars tonight and that is courage to me. I feel totally humbled to even be associated with the word ‘courage’ when I heard their stories.” He continued with a heart-warming story of his own coming out and then urged the Point Scholars to keep being who they are and never shy away from anything, “Be proud and stand tall.”

Surprise guest and three-time Emmy winner, Glenn Close presented the Point Legend Award to Colonel Grethe Cammermeyer, alongside Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “I could walk a thousand times around this globe but I would never be able to fill your shoes,” Close said to Cammermeyer, who was greeted with a two-minute-long standing ovation. She proudly accepted the award telling the audience, “In 1989, I was the only gay person in the world,” she said to many laughs. “And I was going to take on the military and they were going to realize the error of their ways by discharging gays and lesbians. That did not happen. I am humbled by the award this evening and I accept it on behalf of the 40,000 gay and lesbian service members who have been discharged since the 1980s and who by the end of this year will no longer have to serve in silence but can serve with dignity.”

MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts presented the Point Inspiration Award to Johnson & Johnson, which was accepted by Chris Hacker, Chief Design Officer, J&J Consumer Companies.

Musical performances included an unplugged set from Grammy winner Rob Thomas and show-stopping songs from Broadway stars Kerry Butler and Montego Glover. Additional participants included Sandra Bernhard, Marsha Thomason (“White Collar”) and Seth Rudetsky (Sirius/XM).
